A little bit Investing, A little bit personal

👋 Hey!

Thanks for subscribing to The Island Investor.

I'm always happy to chat all things investing so send me your thoughts [email protected]

Hopefully all these will help you navigate the sea of endless information out there.

Jack of All Trades

I have always been a little bit obsessed with learning. I think it's one of the main reasons I enjoy investing so much. There is just an endless amount of info out there.

If you get tired of learning how to value companies, you can learn how to trade or dive into macroeconomic trends. The financial world is changing every minute of every day. You have to sprint just to keep up.

As great as this is, it has its downsides.

One major issue is information overload. After a certain point, trying to keep up with every aspect of markets just leaves you with a surface-level understanding of what's really going on.

You end up with answers for everything but authentic opinions on nothing.

Retention is Key

Recently, my own failed attempts at mastering the entire market has made this all too clear.

Over the last few months, I have tried to increase my level of learning, constantly reading, listening to podcasts and watch videos about every aspect of investing, all in the naive pursuit of 'all the answers'.

You have all heard of the 'less is more' approach, right?

Well, for some unknown reasons, I sided with the lesser celebrated 'more is more' approach.

And you guessed it, it has NOT gone well.

I ran through 6 podcasts daily. I had my earphones in every second of the day to the point where my wife reckoned I may be emotionally cheating on her with Spotify.

Endless articles and posts, one after the other.

Countless videos on trading strategies and techniques.

But with no true learning outcome, it quite literally went in one ear and out the other.

I was taking no time to actually process what I was learning and as a result, I retained about 5% of it.

Lesson learned I guess.

Now, after some reflection, I have decided to tweak my approach somewhat.

My New Approach

  1. Each month has a specific learning outcome. This is just a specific trend or topic that the content I consume is focused around.

  2. To be more methodical in my approach, I have made a live notion template that lists the 10 articles and 10 podcasts I listen to weekly. Find the list HERE.

  3. From there I have a weekly Google doc where I take notes of the key takeaways from each piece. I then go over this at the end of each week and highlight the areas of most importance and put these into a master file.

I know restricting the number of articles I read etc. may seem redundant, but my brain only computes 'all or nothing' scenarios, so giving myself an exact target just makes it easier to stick to.

Retention is the key from here on out.

For anyone starting out with investing, I suggest taking a lot of time to figure out the fundamentals. From there, learn one thing at a time

Be very slow and precise about it. Take notes, make highlights about your notes, read them back all the time, implement what you learned and then move on to the next thing.

Be the tortoise, not the hare.

My Notion List

The live notion list I have set up has links to the 5 podcasts and writers whose content I consume every week.

Each week I will also include the 5 other podcasts and articles I have listen to/read. I'll give each a brief review just so you know which ones are worth a listen and which ones to skip.

Hopefully, in a sea of endless content, this helps to narrow your focus.

Check it out here.

And if you have any recommendations, I would love to hear them.

MY TOP 7 FREE INVESTING TOOLS

1.STRATOSPHERE

Probably my favourite free research platform.

Easy to use, awesome stock screener options/ templates and all the company information you need all in one place.

Research public companies 90x faster with up to 35 years of financial data and company-specific KPIs.

2.TradingView

Great for all things charting.

I use a paid version but the fremium model has tons to offer.

Where the world charts, chats and trades markets. We're a supercharged super-charting platform and social network for traders and investors. Free to sign up.

3.StockRow

Great for intraday market snapshots. I just leave this open in my tabs all day.

Stock market news, interactive fundamental chart, advanced stock screener with over 300 indicators and ratios to screen by, detailed overviews and financials for US stocks.

4.Yahoo Finance

Underrated: Simple to use tool with loads of company data, stock info and screeners.

You might think you would eventually outgrow something like Yahoo Finance but I still love it for quick stock overviews.

At Yahoo Finance, you get free stock quotes, up-to-date news, portfolio management resources, international market data, social interaction and mortgage rates that help you manage your financial life.

5.TIKR

This is a tool I only started using recently.

I use it for 1 purpose only. The ‘Track Investing Gurus’ tab.

Great look-through into what top investors are holding (but be mindful of the lag).

Invest like Wall Street. Find the best stocks, follow top investors, quickly analyse businesses, and monitor your portfolio with TIKR.

6.ROIC

Really handy annualised breakdown of valuation metrics which allows you to easily interpret the trend in the data.

7.TWITTER

A cesspool where people gather round to blindly shout their opinions at each other.

But if you are willing to look past that, twitter is invaluable. If you want minute by minute market news from the best in the industry or need to see what’s trending, Twitter is undefeated.

This week was a break from the norm, I will be back next week with more investing ideas and market updates.

In the meantime, here are a few more of my recent article if you are interested.
